Rafael C. Martins


I’m an oceanographer pursuing a Master’s degree in Physical Oceanography, with a focus on submesoscale phenomena. During my undergraduate thesis, I studied a large-scale oceanographic phenomenon, the Brazil Current Inner Recirculation Cell (there is no English version yet), combining a descriptive analysis with a numerical modeling approach.

For my Master’s, I’m working in César Barbedo Rocha’s group, where I study submesoscale fronts observed during the SMODE IOP1 field campaign. My work primarily involves numerical modeling and the use of Oceananigans.

I’m also very interested in science communication and outreach to non-scientific audiences. During my undergraduate studies, I was a member of the UNESCO Chair on Ocean Sustainability, where I mainly worked on communicating ocean-related topics through social media and organizing in-person scientific outreach events.
